Hello Everyone,
I need to upgrade my current 15 year old model with a new flat panel LCD TV. Something around the 40"-42". Price range I'm looking at spending no more than around $1200. Do any of you have any tips or suggestions?

Thanks!

Sharp & Sony are pretty much top of the line systems right now. For your price range you can probably get a 37"-40" 720. For a couple hundred more you can even step up to a 37"-40" 1080P!

*edit* I was searching the net for a new LCD TV a few months back. Someone gave me a link to a very helpful guide on purchasing and LCD. Let me know if you have any more questions Smile

Quote:
General Facts:
- Most important fact: Don't buy a HDTV unless it is 1080p
- LCD is best for anything 37" and smaller
- Plasma is best for 42" and larger
- Best pricing is on units of standard sizes....19", 20" 32" 37" 42" 50" 58" 60" 65"......42" and 50" being the ultimate in price deals currently.
- I ALWAYS PICK PLASMA OVER LCD whenever possible!!
- I ALWAYS PICK PROJECTOR OVER PLASMA whenever possible!!
- Blacks are best on plasma / Black is most important in movie reproduction
- LCD / DLP works best in "Brightly lite rooms - Sun light"
- LCD / Plasma's shpuld last as long as normal tv's of the past
- Once a plasma TV die's - it basically is dead (Plasma is not replacable)
- Projector is the best out of all TV options
- Projector can do 1080i & 1080p (must be rated for it though)
- When a projector dies, basically it's the bulb! Replace the bulb....You got a new set again.
- Projector is not as expensive as everyoe thinks.
- HD-DVD is Dead
- Bluray is the next great thing / And "Is here to stay"
- Buy the best custom remote you can afford - Most used it in an AV system (It's like the Motor in a Car)!!

LCD Facts (Note-I rate my new product picks yearly):
- Sharp Aquos is the best LCD's to buy right now.
- Samsung's are next (viewing angle's not quite as good as Sharp though)
- LG is horrible and is crap
- Sony's pretty damn good....but you pay a premium
- Other LCD's don't apply, since all basis covered with selections listed above
***Sharp is the LCD of choice right now***

Plasma's Facts:
- Panasonic is the best plasma right now.
- Panasonic provides most of all the glass to other brands!
- Pioneer is great (But annouced leaving the market)
- Samsung/Toshiba is equal - decent set's
- Most set's are decent these days - "It's all about the small detail's currently"
- LG is horrible and crap
***Panasonic is the Plasma of choice right now***

Projector's Facts"
- The movies use them for a reason!!
- YES....you can watch TV, HDTV, DVD on them
- General picture sizes 82", 90" 106" 110" 119"
- Need a screen to view
- Again, replace the bulb when it craps out....you have a new set, (do this over & over the life of it).

Thanks everyone for the replies! We just picked up a Sony Bravia 40" 720 LCD for $1232. It was a little over my budget, but well worth it so far. It looks a lot better than my 15 year old model.

That's a pretty nice deal! Are you going to get HD service from your cable provider to go along with it? If not, the picture might look worse than your old set Smile

A little later on this year we plan to, money is a little tight right now. It does look a little fuzzy with our standard package, but the DVD's look amazing!

I don't have HD service either, but hope to in the future. I just purchased the exact same tv at Best Buy a few weeks back.

That's a pretty decent TV... we have had ours for a few years and it still performs just as good as the day we picked it up Smile

Don't buy an HDTV without reading this first
