In some parts of the country aluminum window frames are popular because of their strength. In the northern climates they generally make a poor choice because they transfer the cold into your home. In some cases they can get cold enough to cause condensation which can lead to other problems.

I actually have these type of windows in my house, My house was built in the 50's and you are right, these windows leak like crazy.

I am looking to replace them with old fashioned wood, I think.

Bad installations are the #1 problem with window failures and leaks. I generally suggest hiring an expert.

Agree on all accounts.

When I explain it to folks, installation is just as critical as product at the end of the day.
