Can you explain some of the benefits of vinyl windows over other styles?

Vinyl does not:

Rot like wood.

Require painting like wood.

Attract the cold like metal windows.

Rust like steel framed windows.

Somewhere I have a long winded list that I will post.

That is great..I especially like the part about not having to paint them. We will have to paint our house this spring/summer and I am not looking forward to that.

How does the cost compare to other windows?

The prices are about the same. You can spend $200-$1500 for any type of window.

OUCH..$1500 is a house payment for me, not a window. $200 does not hurt my wallet as much.

The $200 windows are like a house payment, you will need to buy them every few years. The seals fail, the weatherstripping fails, the latches fail, the frames sag, the glass breaks............$200 windows are very expensive in the long run!

I agree... I would never purchase the cheapest window just because I know that they will end up costing more than the expensive window in the long run. We did however receive a quote over the weekend so we are looking for cheaper windows at the moment.

A good mid grade window will run you around $500-$600 each and they should last you a lifetime. In the long run I would suggest a good triple pane window for $700-$900.

i agree again with FHI..

Okna make a great window with one of the lowest u-values in the industry; a .15. in fact thats probably the best. however, there are other good companies such as soft-lite,gorell, thermal ind(park ave).
A WINDOW IS not AN EXPENSE,IT'S AN INVESTMENT AND THAT IS WHY THERE ARE INVESTMENT GRADE WINDOWS. cheap windows are one of the most expensive decisions you will ever make so don't make that mistake. a cheap window for 300 bucks installed will cost over TWICE that amount in a few years when you have to pay someone to rip them out and install a higher quality product that actually does what a window is supposed to do.

I definitely agree with the above posts. Even a decent entry level window will be $400+ when all is said and done.
