Window glass like any solid surface attracts heat. Since solid surfaces can not absorb heat they let it pass through. If you put a piece of glass in front of a lamp and touch the other side it will get hot as the heat passes through. This is why single pane glass increases your heating bill, it lets all of the heat go outdoors!
New replacement windows with two or three layers of glass that are separated by Argon or Krypton gas slow down the heat transfer. With new replacement windows some home owners are reducing their heating bills by as much as 30% and a few save as much as 50%! In this thread we will discuss how your home will benefit if you use energy efficient windows. |

| We had a couple sales guys out that were promising 50% savings but one would not put anything in writting. The other guy had a longwinded "promise sheet" but the small print said something about a one time deal. Are these promises all hype? |

This is a hard one to answer. Depending on your existing windows and how much air they leak AND what you buy for new windows your savings can vary. I have installed triple pane windows in homes that had very poor windows and the people saved a ton of money. Recently we installed triple pane windows in a home that had top of the line expensive windows and the home owners are saving a bunch of money on their heating bills.
Some of the savings are dependent on the installation of your windows. You can take the most expensive window in the world and if it is installed improperly the window is useless.
In reference to your question about savings promises, you really have to read the fine print. I have seen a bunch of them that only give you $200 or so ONCE if they do not save you 30-40-50%. I much rather have my potential clients call or e-mail my past clients to ask about their savings. |

I think it's very hard to promise a 50% savings... someone is trying to make a profit. The savings depends on a lot of things. Type of window, how well in installation went, type of window already in home, etc. |

| I agree with the statement posted above, the savings depends on the situation and the house itself. They should of said it could save you up to 50%. |

Unless your windows are stuck in the open position or broken glass, there is no replacement window in the world that will approach 50% in savings.
Run from any contractor that ever promises you that number. |
