I'm noticing more and more that houses in our particular location will install the windows on the 1st and 2nd floors with the roof left off for a few days. Is this normal and what is the purpose of it. I've always thought the frame and roof goes up before the windows.

That is a little odd and I'm not to sure why they do that for. I'm interested in knowing the answer to this as well.

It pretty much depends on the builder. Some prefer putting the windows in early while others wait until the have the entire frame of the house up.

I've heard that the windows can potentially break from the added pressure from the weight of the roof. So I think you should install the windows after the roof has been placed on your home. If you were an experienced contractor it would probably be safe, but it sounds like your a novice and you should be really careful with this project.
