The third pane is very important, it provides;

1. Another chamber that retards the transfer of heat.

2. It allows for a second layer of LOW E film that can block out up to 95% of harmful UV rays.

3. The 2nd layer of Low E film also protects your home from heat build up during the summer.

4. The third pane of glass allows the use of Krypton gas which is more dense than Argon gas.

The only reason for buying double pane glass is if your window salesperson was to lazy to show you the benefits of triple pane glass.

What is the price difference in double pane vs triple pane? Is it worth it for that extra pane?

Depends on the brand and the company selling the windows. Generally $50-$200 per window is normal. The investment will pay you back over time:

1. Lower heating bills
2. Lower AC bills
3. Less fading of your carpet, drapes and furniture when the triple panes have two layers of Low E glass.

I have received several quotes in the past week on replacement windows. One quote did include triple pane windows. The company who gave me this quote is having a March "sale" and is offering triple pane for the price of double pane. However the salesman never said anything about krypton gas. Is it possible that both sides of the middle pane are filled with Argon gas? Assuming that is true, does that defeat the purpose of triple pane?

Thanks
