During the winter months, my windows get so cold that you can put your hand 2-3 inches from the glass and you can feel the cold air. Is this normal or do they need fixed/replaced?
Thanks |

| It sounds to me like you need new replacement windows if your feeling a draft. You will feel a little bit of cold if you hold your hands close enough to each window though. If you holding your hands 2-3 inches you shouldn't feel anything unless it's a draft. |

Yep, it looks like it's time for a few new windows if you feel air coming through. About how many windows are we talking about here? |

Thanks for the fast responses everyone! I'm going to need almost all of my windows replaced it looks like. Hopefully the cost won't be to much. |

Just a little update everyone. I think I have decided to go ahead and get most of my windows replaced. some aren't to bad right now so I'm just going to leave those a lone. I'm going to be getting an estimate here in just a few days. |

| Ours are doing the same thing which is why we are thinking of just having them replaced. That is unless we could somehow fix them for just a few months. |

| We just received our estimate and it is well within our budget. So we have decided to go ahead and hire that contractor to do all of the work for us. |

| As everyone said above, they definitely need replaced. Mine are just about the same way. Don't even bother with trying to fix them. I've been there done that and I haven't had the best experiences with it. |

I had old wood windows in my home. Purchased it about a year ago and last year, I went through my first winter and oh boy, I could feel a cold draft. It was one of the reasons why I decided on getting vinyl replacement windows. They have made a huge difference. Not sure if the person who post this had issues with their vinyl windows or if they were dealing with wood window issues. I had wood. I'll never go back. Though, I can see from a historical aspect why people love them.
Oh well.. if anybody else in Richmond, I recommend they check out Edit- the link was removed by the site's admin. |

| Now that winter is upon us, many people are in your same situation and leaning towards window replacement. There are many great windows out there that will help conserve energy, however there are many more that will not meet your expectations on performance. Take some time and look into NFRC ratings on the products and then look into the company you choose to do the installation. Remember no matter how good the window is it will not perform properly if not installed properly.. |

It might very well be best to replace the window if you feel a draft , but I was just reading about this issue, and it isn't always best to replace them. I'd recommend having a contractor take a look. I came across an article (http://detroithomeimprovement.blogspot.com/2011/05/are-your-windows-leaking-cold-air.html) that addresses the topic of cold, leaky windows, and it might prove helpful. |
