Hi all,

Not sure if this is the place to put it or not, but here goes. A friend of mine took some window measurements for me, he assumed I was getting new construction windows, so he measured from the drywall to drywall. But I ordered vinyl replacement windows, so they should have been quite a bit smaller. I talked to a guy, he can install them, he'll just need to remove some siding and he said something about a flange. But he gave me an estimate of about $1500 to put 3 windows in. Does that seem outrageous or about right? He also said it would probably take him 3 days. 1 day per window seems nuts, but maybe it is a big job. Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks!

Most "replacement windows" can be used as "new construction windows" by adding a nailing fin. The price is fair for new construction windows since the job is more labor intensive than standard replacement windows.

Your installer will have to cut back your siding so the window can be installed with the nailing fins. On the inside he/she will have to install wood from the window out to the sheetrock and then install new interior trim. On the outside, new trim will need to be installed around the window or new siding will have to be installed.

Since I have not looked at the job I can't comment about it taking 3 days. Does the $1500 include the interior and exterior trim?

Actually, the price is $1750, and it includes doing everything, interior and exterior trim. I could buy the 3 replacement windows again for $900 and then just install them myself. Maybe that is the smarter thing to do. I'm getting another quote from a guy, I should be hearing from him today. I told him if he can do it near $1000, I would hire him, but if it's much higher, I would just go buy new windows that are the right size.[/quote]

Keep us posted on how you make out. While I can't see the job taking 3 days I think the price is fair.

I would focus more on the what the finish project will look like and not so much on the cost. If you look around you could hire someone for $300 for your project.......their work might suck, the windows might leak but you could have your project completed for whatever price you want.
