I just received my very first window quote and it's much more than what I had expected. I was hoping for around $300-$400 per window. The window is a very basic stand size with no extra or added features. What would make this window cost $700? Should I keep shopping around for cheaper quotes?

Thanks,

The company probably has a min. order. If they are insured and you get two guys out there, they have to cover there expenses. Also there are two trips.1 sales and 1 install. Try to see if they will give you a break on two or three windows. Instead of 2100 maybe you'll pay 1600. That's if you need more windows.

It doesn't hurt to shop around to get a few different quotes. That's definitely one thing that I would consider. The more windows you replace the cheaper the windows should be per unit.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I have another guy coming tomorrow to give me another quote. Hopefully his product will be just as good and the price may be a little more in my range Smile

That does seem a little high to me. We just paid about $450 a piece for what seems like a good quality window. We didn't get the cheapest or the most expansive.

How does the old saying go... "A good salesman can sell reading glasses to a blind guy!" ??? haha

Most of the companies which sell a vinyl window for a $1,000 are pretty much giving you a window worth anywhere from $300 to $500, they are just good at finding suckers! There is one born every minute. Nobody can tell me ONE vinyl window that is truely worth a grand.. that isn't marked up like crazy!!!! Sheesh! ARe you kidding me? Maybe wood because it's a different sort of process altogether.

I don't consider myself a window expert but my dad was a contractor and knows a bit about buying windows wholesale and has a general idea of what their worth. I was quouted as much as $16,000 to do my entire house. Like I mentioned on this board, I found another company, in the Richmond area who did it for a lot less. I showed my father the info sheets and pricing about the window the company in Richmond wanted to sell me and he said it was a great window at an amazing value. I was also happy with the install, etc. I really felt blessed to have found them. I can't imagine what I'd go if I was stuck paying $16,000! I'd be in tears right about now.

Problem is, according to pop, a lot of major home improvement companies -- your Lowes, your Home DEpots, etc --- just buy the cheapest junk they can find. The windows they get aren't worth the racks they place them on and they'll sell you one for $120 or so. I mean, if you want junk... you can find it. If you want to be cheap, buy a pinto, you know? If you want something that won't break down every other year... invest a little. Save up. Get finacing. Windows should last a lifetime, so don't penny pinch. My goodness!!!

Nobody saids you need the Royal Royce of windows, but at least get a Camry or an Accord or something that'll work well. A solid investment might cost more than the Pinto but at least you can look back and not have buyers remorse. I admit, $16,000 is stupid, I admit that. I could probably get those same windows for $8,000 from a company who wasn't so slimy because that is about what their worth.

Oh well ---- I will say this, just as a headsup and upon my research... for all the people on the WIndow WOrld craze... Window World orders their windows from Alside (I have a buddy who works there) which is a good company but their entry level window, their $189 window is the Alside Excaliber window which is pretty much the bottom of the barrel at Alside. I mena you talk about cheaply made... it's CHEAP!!! Just a piece of junk. It's pretty much like tissue paper and plastic wrap. haha I think they convience about 80% of their buyers to upgrade which is good because I wouldn't be caught dead with that $189 window, if I had any commonsense.

If you want a low price and a decent window, and you live in VA. The company I found here in Richmond --- won't mention their name because I'm sure this forum is run by a competitor --- their cheapest prouduct was a better window than the most expensive Alside window that they carried! AND it was like $20 less a window. I mean, better and cheaper... I still upgraded myself because I wanted LowE, ARgon, etc, but still... frame by frame... that Alside window from WW is a joke. haha I mean, think about that for a minute... If you want to be cheap and only cheap and save money... whatever, but why be cheap when you get something that's at least decent and cheap.

I just hate seeing people get ripped off.

Take care

The owner of this forum does not do business in VA (not a competitor) however the forum does not provide free ad space for any window company.

I live in So Cal, one big replacement windows in the area came and gave me the quote for 11 windows. The Atrium was quoted $15263, and for Andersen it was $23181. After some dance the guy lower the price to $9988, and if I pay by cash it will be $7988 (incl tax). I sent him out with a "thank you, we'll call you". I'm looking into getting a quote from another company. I just have some questions when people talking about price in this forum, does that include installation? Here are some things that the guy advertised when he tried to sell the windows:
- Argon gas - claim that it cost $155
- LowE3 - $185
- Wrapping - $145
- Trim kit - $125
- Installation
- Remove and haul away old window - $155
Do these make sense and what should be the fair price?
Thanks
- Phil

Join your local Angie's list and see what others are paying in your area. A really good deal generally will cost you more in the long run.
